DNS - Failed to load control error on booting/logging in.

On logging into Vista Home Premium I get the message appear:

DNS
Failed to load control 'SocketXCtl' from SocketX.OCX. Your version of
SocketX.OCX may be outdated. Make sure that you are using the version of
the control that was provided with your application.

The file doesn't even exist on my computer. I thought it may be
something to do with IP V6, so removed this from the connection
properties. Any ideas what this is relating to so I can remove it, or
fix it?

Cheers.

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
For quite a few people it's by installing Messenger Plus, whose ads for
malware don't identify the malware as such and try to convince you that you
owe it to the author. See also:

Don't ever do a "default" install of anything. Always choose Custom and see
what else is being carried along. Don't install any extras you're not sure
of.

Hey, that all looks simple enough. So when can he actually start to use his
computer?

Re: DNS - Failed to load control error on booting/logging in.

The error comes from a virus that has been floating around in some
keygens. In the registry go to HKEY Local
Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Run. Among the run
entries you will find a registry key named DSS. The DSS entry is the
culprit behind the error. Delete the entry, restart your computer and
you should be fine.

psg190, i am having the exact same problem from a keygen download but
when i go into the registry there is no entry of DSS in the Run folder
and I still get the error. Please let me know what is causing this.

Thanks for the tip "psg190", it worked like a charm.

BKDizzle22...you must have something else wrong then, cause I did what
he said, and it worked perfect.

Re: DNS - Failed to load control error on booting/logging in.

For People With Vista X64 Versions :

you will find the DSS entery in a diffrent location :

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Delete the DSS entery there :

DSS c:\windows\dllservapi.exe

it seems to refer to this 'dllservapi.exe' file , dont know if it
should be deleted as well.

Hope this helps.
